Smart bulbs work like many other smart home products - they connect to the user's smartphone via wireless technology and allow the user to control the bulb via an app.
Some smart bulbs use Bluetooth to communicate directly with the user's phone, but since this is a point-to-point connection, the user will not be able to control them from their phone when they are not at home.
